"Depicted here are four prophets: Isaiah with his prophetic writings, Ezekiel with scrolls of scripture from two nations, Moroni humbly kneeling over the plates he diligently kept, and Joseph Smith retrieving the record and fulfilling a long-awaited promise. Framing the prophets are motifs from the scriptures—golden wheat woven with tares as described in the parables of Christ, as well as vines and branches, further connecting the Lord to his messengers. I have made an effort to progress from the color and texture of the area surrounding the ancient prophets to a modern style and palette used beneath the modern prophet, Joseph Smith. Each element, color, and figure testifies of the continuation of the Lord’s pattern of calling prophets to lead His people."

9th International Art Competition

I've just submitted my entry for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints 9th International Art Competition. Those chosen for display have their work shown from April of next year through October in the Conference Center of the church in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The text in the painting reads as follows: On the sleeves of the divine messengers, "Tace, obmutesce" which means, "Peace, be still" in Latin. The remaining text is in Hebrew. On the temple behind the woman is "Holiness to the Lord – House of the Lord" On the oil vial it reads "Living Water" in reference to Jesus Christ.

OrangeUtahn at the Hogle Zoo

I'm really excited to be a part of this year's "Orange Utahn" fundraiser at the Hogle Zoo. The beginning stages of this painting were created by Elijah, a male orangutan, who used a brush on the end of a PVC pipe create the swirls and shaped you see in the first pictures. (I was so excited to get started that I failed to take a photo before I had added a little bit myself.) Then, I took his work home and created the final painting you see here. The artwork with be auctioned by the zoo to raise funds for orangutan protection in Borneo and elsewhere. You can read more about the dangers orangutans face here. Be watching for more updates and announcements about the auction!

"The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints provides relief and development projects for humanitarian purposes in countries all over the world. Projects operate without regard to the nationality or religion of the recipients." One of their projects is to provide clean water for developing areas in sub-Saharan Africa. The church asked me to create a simple illustration to represent some of these efforts. Lehi and Sons

Earlier this year, I was given the opportunity of presenting my work at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Museum of Church History and Art in Salt Lake City, Utah. During the presentation I was able to draw for the museum patrons, using my Wacom tablet and Photoshop, and demonstrate my process from concept sketch to finished piece. Time didn't allow for finishing the drawing during that presentation, but I've finally been able to get around to it. It's not fully finished yet, but I hope you enjoy seeing this work in progress.

The drawing depicts the prophet Lehi and three of his sons, Laman, Lemuel, and Nephi. The beginning chapters of The Book of Mormon describe their travels, detailing how their family experienced the consequences of great faith and, at times, the lack thereof.

UPDATE:

Below is the final version of my drawing of Lehi, Nephi, Laman, and Lemuel. I had felt for sometime that something was missing and after I posted the process pieces above, I realized that no artwork depicting this family would be complete with out the plate record that Lehi's sons returned home to retrieve. As in all things within religion, the first impulse, while important, should only mark the beginning of the journey.

Horse Crazy!

While a fellow at Chronicle Books, I had the opportunity to design the covers for the American versions of Alison Lester's "Horse Crazy" series. The illustrations for the books are done by Roland Harvey and are full of life, energy and color. I designed the title of the books to blend with his artwork while still maintaining high visibility. My thanks continue to go out to Chronicle for the great opportunity to work with them!

I was going through some old sketchbooks today, collecting work and words for a book I'm putting together, and came across this sketch of a variation on "Where the Wild Things Are". I don't usually base my drawings off of other people's characters, but I'd be a fool to deny the great impact that Maurice Sendak has had on my perception of what children's art and storytelling can be. Thank you Mr. Sendak, and thank you Mom, for making sure I knew about him.

The event will be held Friday, Feb. 26, and features eight artists who work in very different genres. Patrons will be able to watch them at work and also interact and ask questions. Harp music will be provided by Melanie Hunt. For more information, please click here.

This years featured artists are:

Tom Holdman, who has created stained glass for a number of LDS temples and who specializes in painting on glass by using powdered glass that is fired at high temperatures to get the shading and effects.

Brian Kershisnik, a painter who specializes in contemporary art that reflects a broad international background.

Elizabeth Peterson, who creates intricate and delicate bobbin lace.

Julie Rogers, an award-winning painter who "loves to paint the simple things of every day life."

Al Rounds, an internationally acclaimed artist who mostly does landscapes in watercolor and giclee.

Kraig Varner, a sculptor who has mastered a range of sculpting genres from figurative to contemporary to portrait work.

Blanche Wilson, who has a broad art background and specializes in woodblock printing.

and David Habben, a contemporary illustrator who uses traditional and digital media to create works for a wide variety of uses.

Friday Night Gallery Stroll

February's SLC Gallery Stroll is gearing up for a bunch of openings this Friday from 6-9pm. There are some great shows opening up, which you can read about here, but I'd like to draw your attention to a couple shows in particular. My photographer friend, Mark Hedengren, will be presenting his work "Three Mormon Towns" at the Rio Grand Building (at the Gateway Mall). Also, be sure to check out the new show at the Kayo Gallery, titled "Round 6". This is a group show in which each of the artists were asked to create work in a 12x12" size. I'll be there along with many other SLC artists, as well as a guest visit by the Salt City Derby Girls. Other show's of note include "Art at the Main", a figurative exhibit at the SLC Public Library and the ongoing Jamie Wyeth show "Seven Deadly Sins" at the Salt Lake Art Center. There's plenty more to choose from, so be sure to get out and support the growing SLC art scene!

PowerSpeak Product Launch

Over the last couple months I've been busy creating a series of illustrations for powerspeak12 Foreign Language Courses, a marvelous new program providing language training to all age levels through the public library system. In addition to small line drawings that accompany the lessons, I was also able to draw a sequencial series which tells the story of a young character learning new languages as part of his world travels. My thanks go out to Joseph, David, and all the amazing people who have worked on this project!
